Activity Name

Observing that energy is ability to do work

Objectives

  1. Show the connection between energy and work done
  2. When force is applied, work is done and this changes energy state of the body

  1. Ask students to hold a brick
    1. What happens to their hand?
    2. What happens if it is dropped?
    3. What are the forces acting on it?
  2. Investigate similarly with a spring
  3. Investiate similarly with a rubber band - catapult

Discussion questions

  1. Are you spending energy?
  2. Where is it coming from?
  3. Do you feel any force? Where is it acting from?
  4. When you do work, energy is spent. Where does the energy go (stored as potential energy)?
  5. What happens to the potential energy(Becomes kinetic)?
