One-day workshops on "Audio materials development" for participants of the CELT program (different batches) of RIESI - July 27, 2019, August 24, 2019, September 8, 2019, January 25, 2020, March 1, 2020, March 12, 2021.

Objectives of the workshop

  1. Exploring new digital methods for language learning. Exploring Audacity FOSS (Free and Open Source Software) tool to create rich language resources for use in a language lesson
  2. Learning recording and editing audio using Audacity. Making your audio resource richer by using multiple audio files (background music)
  3. Introduce the philosophy of creating and adapting existing audio resources (Open Educational Resources created with FOSS)
  4. Publishing created audio resource on a public repository for use of all teachers

10.30 -11.00 Record audio using different devices Demo Using different applications for audio recording

Understanding the technical specifications for audio – headphones, microphone, etc

Check list of recording a good quality audio

Audacity interface - Go through the audio recording process – record pause, play, stop and save as project file, export. Mobile apps are like sound recorder, audio recorder, recorder

Record and save audio files.

11.15-12.45 Creating audio resources for the lessons in the text Demo and Hands-on 1. Understanding the power of audio in a classroom

2. Appreciating the incremental benefit that the digital audio resource brings to a classroom – possibilities of introducing contextual sounds
3. Understanding elements of good script writing

1. Participants have to select (on selected story line and poem etc)

2. Use lab computers or their personal laptop or mobile phones to record.
3.If it is story - participants can make groups of 2 people to record
4. For Poem - try to record same poem with different voice modulation
5. Save your audio files.
6. Import all recorded audio files into systems.

1. Use edit tools to refine your audio by removing unwanted part

2. To understand what is track and its uses
3. Use multiple tracks to add background music for the audio
4. Participants identify the sound effects they would like to add
5. File export as audio files and save as project

Understanding of using different audio effects to make more effective of the story

1. Use amplify to adjust the output volume of your audio files

2. Fade in/out to adjust the audio -voice modulation
3. Change pitching and adding echo for the voice

4. Use different audacity tools like envelop, noise removal, silence.

5. Save Export your audio files in different formats.

4.30 - 5.00 Participants presentation Presentation Review participants created audio resources 1. Participants have to present their audio resources created in workshop.

Some principles for recording audio resource

Pedagogical principles (Principles for recording conversations amongst two or more people)

  1. Relevant to the student school community home context.
  2. Meaningful. Richness, variety.
  3. Allowing scope for background music, sounds.
  4. Appropriate level of language complexity.

Technology rules (Rules for getting a good quality recording using your mobile phone or laptop)

  1. Script need to be ready before recording and detailed
  2. Find out a less noisy and closed place to record
  3. Turn off fans and air conditioners, use curtains or thick cloth to cover windows
  4. Don't use computer which makes noise
  5. Keep your Mic at-least 15cm away from your mouth
  6. Use good head phones –
    1. Audio jacks are working fine
    2. Mic input is working
    3. Headphones should support audacity or any other audio tools
    4. Input level should be less than 100%
  7. Do test recording to check quality. Satisfy yourself before final recording
