Prerequisites/Instructions, if any

  1. Allow students to bring up ideas for why India is seen as being 'under developed', and build on them.
  2. Encourage debate in the Indian and Karnataka context -
    1. compare sex ratios across states in India and across districts in Karnataka.
    2. Compare sex ratios across the decades (from census data).
    3. Compare sex ratios in 0-6 age group and across age groups
  3. Encourage all students to participate

Open ended discussion, with teacher probing and adding ideas and questions


Developmental Questions (What discussion questions)

  1. The sex ratio is often seen as an indicator of women's status. Why?
  2. The ratio is further decreasing when the economic status becomes better, in many cases (for e.g. Mandya which is relatively prosperous has a lower sex ratio). Why?
  3. What measures can the government take to improve the ratio? Analyse these over social, political, health aspects
